Gresham, OR (KPTV) — A man who was told to move out of his mother's home killed her cat and tore apart her house, according to police.
Officers were called to a home on the 400 block of Northeast 18th Street in Gresham at 11:15 a.m. Monday on a report of a disturbance.
A woman, described by police as "distraught," said her 27-year-old son had gone on a violent rampage.
Investigators arrived at the scene and found a smashed car windshield outside the home. Inside, they found broken pictures, figurines and lamps. The home was described as "demolished and trashed," according to a police report.
Police said liquid had been poured on the carpet and walls, and threatening messages were scrawled across doors and on pieces of paper.
A cat was also found dead, with its throat appearing to have been cut, according to police.
Jonathan Wagner, 27, was gone when police arrived. Investigators said his mother had recently requested that he move out of her home and she had placed some of his belongings in boxes.
Wagner was spotted walking near Northeast Kelly Avenue and Burnside Road and he was arrested by Gresham police.
He was booked in the Multnomah County Jail on charges of criminal mischief and aggravated animal abuse.
Police said the 16-year-old tabby cat, named Tom, had belonged to the suspect's late grandfather. Wagner's mother had been taking care of the cat since last October. A necropsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the animal's death.
