SALT LAKE CITY — When it comes to fireworks, the number one safety rule is use common sense.

Also, many problems could be prevented by following the instructions that come with the fireworks.

Have you ever actually read the directions on fireworks? They recommend:

  • Wear gloves and eye protection when lighting fireworks

  • Wear gloves when using sparklers and teach children not to wave sparklers

  • Never put fireworks in your pocket

  • Never place any part of your body directly over a firework device when lighting the fuse

  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person

  • Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby in case of fire or other mishap
