OGDEN (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty to murder in the death of his girlfriend's 3-month-old daughter has been sentenced to up to life in prison.

The Standard-Examiner of Ogden reports that 37-year-old Jeremy David Marshall was sentenced Wednesday in an Ogden court during an emotional hearing where the mother and her family held each other and cried.

Authorities say Marshall caused the infant's death by shaking her and hitting her head on the crib in December 2011.

Marshall said Wednesday it was an accident and that he's sorry.

The baby's mother, Afton Moneypenny, called Marshall a monster in a letter read aloud in court.

Deputy Weber County Attorney Teral Tree said the baby girl lived a life of pain, suffering a broken wrist, collarbone and ribs even before she died.
