SALT LAKE CITY — Police are looking for a man who is accused of assaulting his girlfriend in a parking lot.

Police said a May 8 report claimed Antonio Rafael Shropeshire, 32, picked up his girlfriend from work before driving her to a Glendale shopping area parking lot, where he assaulted her.

Shropeshire repeatedly punched her in the face, hit her head into the windshield of the vehicle and strangled her until she became unconscious, according to police.

He then drove her around the city, stopping occasionally to beat her, police said. During this time, he also allegedly threatened to kill her.

During one stop, the woman was able to escape custody, flee to a nearby home and ask for help, according to police.

Shropeshire fled the area and police have since recovered the stolen vehicle he was driving at the time of the assault, police said. He has no known address and may be staying in various places throughout Salt Lake Valley.

Shropeshire, who also goes by Tony Vargas, Oz Eight or Eight Ounce, is described as a 5-foot, 9-inch black man weighing 180 pounds with a tattoo on his neck and a mustache and partial goatee.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 801-799-3000 or send an anonymous tip by texting the keyword TIPSLCPD and relevant information to 274637 in reference to case number 14-74250.
