BOUNTIFUL — A man found by police in the front yard of a burning house Friday night has second-degree burns on his arms and head.

At about 10 p.m., South Davis Metro Fire responded to a report of a structure fire on 600 East near Center Street.

“We when we arrived, the house was completely involved in fire,” South Davis Metro Fire Chief Jeff Bassett said. “We had a lot of trees and shrubs around the house and in the backyard that were also on fire.”

The man was transported to Lakeview Hospital. Bassett said he’s a former owner of the house, which is abandoned, and the man stays there occasionally.

The crew extinguished the flames by surrounding the house.

“It is a suspicious fire just in the fact that we know that there’s no power or gas to the home, so we know that there’s no electricity or natural gas or anything that can start a fire,” Bassett said.

Investigators were interviewing the man and neighbors of the house to determine the cause.

Bassett said the fire department would keep a fire engine at the house Saturday.

"We need to work with the family that owns the property to get the house demolished, because it’s in unsafe condition,” he added.

The chief said authorities will work with the property's owner to have what is left of the home demolished because it is a hazard.
