SALT LAKE CITY — Search and rescue crews were called out to two different incidents on Saturday.
A medical helicopter was called in to find two hikers stranded on the north side of Mount Olympus. They were not injured but they were stuck on a ledge. Search and rescue crews were able to rescue the hikers without incident.
Crews were also called out to Storm Mountain to aid an injured climber.
A man was climbing near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon with a friend when climbers above them knocked some rocks loose, officials said.
One rock was fairly large and hit the man in the back.
An off-duty Salt Lake City firefighter happened to be bicycling below and heard someone calling for help.
“She was just asking for me to help with her friend that got injured,” Jefferson LeCates said. “I went up there and realized it was a spinal injury and he thought it was a good idea and I thought it was a good idea that he doesn’t come down by himself.”
LeCates called 911 and search and rescue crews brought the man down the steep terrain.
The extent of the climber’s injuries were not disclosed.
