FRUITLAND, Duchesne County — A 2-year-old girl was saved from a Duchesne County river Monday morning after a family member pulled her to safety, police say.

The child slipped into the river around 9 a.m. and floated approximately 200 feet before her family found her and pulled her from the river, Duchesne County Sheriff's Sgt. Carl Reilley said. Family members immediately began CPR efforts, which were taken over by emergency responders when they arrived at the scene.

Reilley said a medical helicopter transported the girl to Primary Children's Hospital. Her condition was unknown Monday.

"The water is really cold, so hopefully she pulls through this," he said. "I don't know what kind of chances she has."

The child's family had been holding a gathering for the holiday when the incident occurred. Reilley said it is believed to be an accident and that there is no investigation surrounding the child's fall.

Counselors are being made available to the child's family, if needed. Reilley urged others recreating to be diligent.

"We've got high water this time of year," he said. "We've got to be careful of what we do and where we're at and watch our children as much as we can."
