A simple, random act of service over a fence post caught our attention recently. 86-year-old Inocencio Lopez was struggling to tear down an old fence so he could put in a new one. Two firefighters, who work nearby, saw Mr. Lopez hard at work — and without giving it much thought, stopped to ask if they could help.
Ogden Fire Captain Aaron Jackman told us they often see the dark side of society while on the job, and the one thing that always buoys them up is offering service to people.
KSL applauds the actions of Captain Jackman and his partner firefighter, Ryan Highland.
"Helping neighbors is part of the firefighter tradition," Captain Jackman said.
But it is also part of the Utah tradition. Our state is known for its great spirit of volunteerism. People here give generously of their time and money, but maybe there is something a little extra you can do to help those around you. The firefighters' actions reminded us that we are all secants and stewards of our neighborhoods, and each of us can build up strong communities.
