COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A woman hired to be a caretaker for an elderly woman with dementia has been arrested for allegedly stealing her money.

Teresa Ann Muir, 47, of Midvale, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday for investigation of four counts of abuse, neglect or exploitation of a disabled or elderly adult.

Muir was employed by Haven Health Care and provided occasional care for a woman at Coventry Senior Living Center, 6895 S. Whitmore Way (2220 East), according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

The elderly woman's daughter informed the care center that she believed someone had been stealing money from her mother for several months, the report stated. She then told investigators she had set up a hidden camera in her mother's room and recorded a caretaker taking money from her mother's purse, according to the report.

The footage revealed four different instances of Muir taking money from a purse located in the woman's closet, according to the jail report. The daughter had also kept a log of when she put money in her mother's purse and noted it was missing the following day. Muir was shown in records as having worked each of those days, according to the report.

Muir then admitted to taking money from the purse on two additional occasions that weren't videotaped, police said. She claimed she took $10 each time.

Cottonwood Heights police said the investigation into whether any other residents of the care center were victimized was ongoing.
