SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a man after a 33-year-old was stabbed to death in his vehicle early Saturday morning.

Joaquin Gonzalez, of Chicago, Ill., and a female friend had returned to their vehicle near 500 West and 100 South after attending a movie when they were approached by Harlin Argelio Ramos at about 1:20 a.m., Salt Lake City police say. Ramos took Gonzalez by surprise and the two fought, police said. Ramos stabbed Gonzalez, who died from his injuries.

The woman, who was not identified by police, tried to help Gonzalez, but he died at the scene. She was not injured, police said.

Police obtained information leading them to a local motel where Ramos was taken into custody.

Early reports indicated another man was with Ramos at the time. After further investigation, police do not believe the second male was involved in Gonzalez's stabbing. He "is neither a suspect nor person of interest at this time," the press release said.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Salt Lake City police at 801-799-3000. Anonymous tips can be texted to 274637, keyword TIPSLCPD.
