SALT LAKE CITY — University of Utah police are investigating the theft of a wrought iron gate on campus.

Sometime around March 18, a groundskeeper noticed the gate was missing from between two pillars in front of a walkway at President's Circle. The pillars were donated by the classes of 1906, 1907 and 1908, and were built in 1913, according to a plaque on the pillars.

The gate is part of two sets of gates that were always left open, University of Utah Police Sgt. Mike Richards said.

The department has no leads, but Richards said it was likely stolen by someone who believed the metal is worth something. However, the gates are wrought iron, which typically isn't highly valued. Richards guessed the gate is about 5 feet tall, weighs about 200 pounds and is worth around $800.

The other three gates have been taken down. It is unclear whether they will be replaced.

Richards said the department receives about 600 reports of theft each school year.

Anyone with information is asked to call U. police at 801-585-2677.
