PLEASANT VIEW — A teacher has been suspended after having several classes write crude words on a whiteboard.
Weber High School teacher Ashley Williams had three classes write crude names for genitalia on a whiteboard in order to teach students what not to say.
“At the beginning of class she made the comment that she shouldn’t be doing this but she’s going to anyway,” James Allen, a student in one of Willams’ classes, said.
“We weren’t even participating in the discussion between our colleagues about trying to find genital terms because we found it offensive and we didn’t want to participate,” Allen said. “It was really uncomfortable.”
Several students took pictures of the “exercise,” showed them to parents, and they called the district. The district is investigating and parents are pleased with the quick response. Allen says Williams shouldn’t be fired, just reprimanded.
Williams did not respond to attempts to contact her.
Other students say that Williams has a history of “unique” teaching methods. They and their parents are not happy with her and are pleased with Weber District’s quick response. A spokesman called her act “inappropriate.”
“I think she is a really good teacher and she made a mistake. I don’t think her entire career should be over because of it,” Austin Hanni, another of Williams’ students, said. “I think there needs to be some repercussions so that stuff like this doesn’t happen again.”
