SALT LAKE CITY — Season two of BYUtv's suspense drama "Granite Flats" began Sunday night.

"Granite Flats" is a coming of age drama, set against the backdrop of the Cold War in a small Colorado town. According to the show’s creator and director, Scott Swofford, the unique formula works.

“It’s the most successful premiere in BYU television’s history,” he said.

Season two brings new faces and eight new episodes, shot entirely on locations in Utah that deliver Hollywood-quality drama on a much smaller budget.

“We spend so significantly less than Hollywood spends, that what fills in the gap is creativity,” he said.

The popular period drama is filled with espionage and double agents but its sleuthing team of junior detectives steals the show. Actor Charlie Plummer and actress Malia Tyler said the set vibe is different.

“Everybody is so nice, not really more relaxed, but I feel more relaxed and at home here,” Tyler said.

“Everyone who works on the set is just so pleasant, so respectful,” Plummer added.

Actor Jonathan Morgan Heit said, “The ensemble cast is kind of fun because we all stay in one hotel. There’s a community type of vibe, and we go to restaurants together.”

Despite a cast of characters Utah audiences love, and plenty of plot twists to keep fans guessing, the secret to "Granite Flats’" success isn’t much of a mystery. It’s a rare blend of intrigue and entertainment that families can watch together.
