AUTSIN — As part of CUPID's introduction to the world, an intern was zapped with 80,000 volts of electricity to demonstrate its power.
CUPID, which stands for Chaotic Unmanned Personal Intercept Drone, made its debut at the South by Southwest festival. The drone was designed by Chaotic Moon as a security device.
“The drone can be deployed when an alarm is triggered," Chaotic Moon told RT. "It can find a subject and send live video to the owners' phone and ask if you want to authorize the subject or detain them. If you detain them, it drops into fully autonomous mode to detain them until police arrive. If need be stunning them with 80,000 volts of electricity to render them incapacitated."
The drone could theoretically be used by law enforcement agencies in the future.
Chaotic Moon intern Jackson Sheehan, 26, and four others volunteered to be zapped by CUPID for the demonstration at SXSW after passing medical evaluations, according to ABC. The company also released a video explaining how the drone works in action.
"Demonstrations like these can seem unsettling, but they help us prepare for the future instead of react to it," CEO Ben Lamm told ABC. "The technology is already here and seeing it in action like this pushes us to have the conversations we need to have about how to deploy drones responsibly."
In the future, Chaotic Moon said it hopes to introduce another version of CUPID that uses pepper spray.
