SALT LAKE CITY — Greg Sherwood, the deputy shot in the head on the same day that Sgt. Cory Wride was killed in January, was given the proceeds from a fundraiser and a dirt bike for his road to recovery.

“I'm doing better. Doing better. Baby steps. Take it day by day,” Sherwood said. “It’s emotional. I just want to thank everybody for their help and support.”

The fundraiser was organized at Wiggy Wash car wash in Spanish Fork to help Sherwood with expenses.

Sherwood was “overwhelmed” that the community would make so much effort to help him and his family.

“If you think about it, if it happened to you, you would want people to come out and do this for you. It’s just important to come out and help,” said supporter 13-year-old Boston Brower.

The fundraiser was organized by Megan Allen and her fiancé, Barry Boulton, who are getting married in the next few weeks. They put a hold on their wedding plans to give back to the community and the Sherwood family.

“It’s been really hard and it hit really hard, so we definitely wanted to give back and make it more of a positive outlook than such a negative all the time,” Allen said. “Some people can call it crazy, but I enjoy giving back more than I enjoy getting, so it’s definitely been a blessing.”

In honor of Sgt. Cory Wride, a bill is in the Utah Legislature that would rename a section of Highway 73 in his honor. The section ranges from Saratoga Springs to the Tooele County line, which includes the place where Wride was killed. That bill is expected to pass.
