LAYTON — Davis School District officials say they will reiterate their policies with all their bus drivers after a young special education student was dropped off on a curb near his home when his mother was not there.

The 4-year-old special education student was let out of school early for parent-teacher conferences, but his mother didn’t know. The bus driver dropped the boy off early and left him alone on the curb near his home, said Davis School District spokesman Chris Williams. His mother found him when she came home later.

"He should have been dropped off to his parents' because he is a special-needs student,” Williams said. “He wasn't, and that was a huge mistake on the part of our bus driver."

The bus driver was a substitute but still should have known the rules, Williams said. If a parent isn’t there to take their special-needs child, the bus driver should take the student back to the school, per school district policy.

"Those rules are in place, and one of the rules is, if the student is special needs, the student is dropped off to his parent," he said.

The driver has apologized for leaving the student on the curb, as well as the district.

“We are sorry,” Williams said. “We have apologized to the mom and we will do everything we can to make sure this does not happen again anywhere.”
