PROVIDENCE, Cache County — Another Utahn has survived being buried in an avalanche, and forecasters say luck was on his side.
The man was snowmobiling with two other people on Logan Peak in Providence Canyon Monday when it appears they triggered a slide from below around 1 p.m.
The man was off his sled at the time and ended up 20 to 30 feet from the snowmobile. The slide buried him completely except for the tips of his red gloves, according to Brett Kobernik with the Utah Avalance Center.
The other two snowmobilers saw that bit of red and used their hands to dig him out.
"That was pure luck that he wasn't buried deeper or those gloves were completely gone," Kobernik said.
He was lucky, Kobernik said, because the snowmobiler was not wearing a beacon, and it would have taken a lot more time to locate him if they hadn't seen his gloves.
The slide was up to 4 feet deep and a half-mile wide, according to Kobernik. He said the Logan area still has a high avalanche danger.
"We are dealing with lots of weak snow, and with the recent snow storm that has added more snow on top of this weak snow, it has created a dangerous situation," he said.
Kobernik said the young man had to be resuscitated when he was pulled from the snow but was released from a hospital later Monday.
