COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Brigham Young University's Tyler Haws has been selected as one of 12 players who will represent Team USA at the upcoming World University Games in Russia.
Following a week of tryouts that involved 26 of the country's top collegians, Haws got the word from coaches early Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
He will become the first BYU basketball player since Devin Durrant in 1983 to represent the United States in international competition. Durrant was on that year's World University Games squad that also featured Karl Malone and Charles Barkley.
The 12 players on the official World University Games roster will take part in a Saturday morning practice; post-practice reaction from Haws and Team USA Head Coach Bob McKillop will be available at "Cougar Tracks" in the early afternoon. The team will hold an intra-squad scrimmage Saturday at 5:30pm at the USOTC Sports Center I complex; the event is open to the public and admission is free.
After two scheduled practices on Sunday, Team USA will leave for Russia on Monday. Practices and scrimmages are set for next Wednesday through Saturday, with the World University Games schedule commencing on Sunday, July 7th.
