SALT LAKE CITY — An early morning shooting has left a 40-year-old man in serious condition.

Salt Lake police were offering few details about the incident Thursday morning.

Officers were called to a report of a shooting just after 11 p.m. Wednesday at 1246 E. Stratford Ave. (2560 South). They found a 40-year-old man lying in the street with a gunshot wound, according to a police spokeswoman.

Neighbors said they heard fighting and five or six gunshots in the duplex behind them on Stratford Road.

"A neighbor called and was concerned about hearing a possible fight and gunfire, and we got to the area and found him laying in the street," said Salt Lake City police Detective Veronica Montoya.

Neighbors reported that when they went outside, the wounded man had made his way to Highland Drive and was lying in a puddle of blood. Witnesses got towels and blankets for the man, and reported that his head was split down the middle in what they think was a beating with a baseball bat. The man also received a gunshot wound in his back.

Investigators did not believe the shooting was self-inflicted but declined to give further details.

"There may have been things on the scene that point to different injuries that happened to the victim and that is something that detectives will investigate," Montoya said.

No information about possible suspects or motive was released Thursday. Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
