OMAHA, Neb. — Taylor Swift made a young cancer patient's dream come true Saturday when she visited the girl at the hospital after a social media campaign caught her attention.
Swift was in town for her Red Tour when a fan-made YouTube video was brought to her attention: a plea for Swift to visit Lauren Hacker, 10, at the Omaha Children's Hospital and Medical Center.
Lauren's loved ones had rewritten the lyrics to Swift's "You Belong to Me" in an effort to convince Swift to make the 10-year-old's dreams come true. "She's a huge fan, you're on tour," they sang. "She's at Children's; you should come see her."
Lauren's parent's reached out to the singer's representatives, who arranged the meeting. The fifth-grader's father, Phil Hacker, wrote about the meeting on his daughter's Caring Bridge blog. He said Swift spent an hour talking to Lauren and her brother, Jonathan. Jonathan played his ukulele for Swift before Lauren took over on keyboard.
"Taylor was very impressed with both performances," Hacker wrote. "I don't mean ‘polite impressed.' I mean ‘real impressed.' "
He said Swift told stories about her childhood and her beginning as a singer, as well as sharing stage designs for her concert. Finally, she took photos with everyone and signed autographs.
"It was a great afternoon for everyone and I'm sure Lauren will remember it for many years to come," Hacker wrote. "So, to Taylor Swift, from a very grateful dad, thanks for brightening our day!"
