SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced this week the release of a new edition of its English-language scriptures.

The new edition has been released in digital formats and will be available in printed formats in August. The updates include revisions to study aids, new photos, updated maps and adjustments to chapter and section headings.

Church leaders said there are no changes significant enough that members should feel they have to purchase a new set of scriptures, "particularly since all of the adjustments are available in digital formats at no cost," according to Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

The updates include changing the spelling of some words, such as changing "stedfast" to "steadfast" and "morter" to "mortar." Typographical errors have also been changed to stay true to early manuscripts.

Studying and understanding the scriptures of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be a little easier now that church officials have completed an eight-year project focused on updating and adjusting the footnotes, chapter headings and study aids associated with the scriptures.

Other updates include efforts to more clearly indicate what is scripture and what is a study aid, and style standardization among titles, tables of content and abbreviations pages. Adjustments to headings have been made to provide clearer context for the scriptures, according to church leaders.

The last update to the English version of the church's scriptures — the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price — was released in 1981 after 10 years of work. The 2013 update took eight years to complete.
