TAYLORSVILLE — A 52-year-old man was killed early Sunday after being struck while on a bicycle.
The man was riding west near 1600 W. Taylorsville Expressway (4500 South) around 2:25 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a 29-year-old man traveling with his wife and 7-month-old son in a Mazda6, Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. The driver apparently did not see the cyclist until it was too late.
"Obviously, it's very traumatic for anybody to be involved in something like that," Hoyal said.
The cyclist, who was not on the shoulder of the roadway, but in a travel lane, died at the scene. Hoyal said the man was not wearing a helmet or reflective vest and there were no lights on the bicycle.
The speed limit in the area is 50 mph.
No citations were issued at the scene and alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor in the crash, though the incident remains under investigation.
Hoyal said a crash analysis reconstruction team responded to the scene and will turn a report of their findings over to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office to screen for any potential charges.
