LOGAN — It's a story that keeps getting more and more unbelievable: a man arrested for three DUIs in less than three days. KSL News brought you the story of the man he hit and nearly killed, now there is law enforcement video of his subsequent arrests.
The video of Daniel Kropf — visibly impaired, ice cream smeared all over his face — is difficult to watch. Recorded on July 10, the video shows only one of three DUIs Kropf was arrested for in less than 48 hours.
"(I) can't get away from you guys," Kropf can be heard telling the officer.
"We're going to do everything that we can to make sure Mr. Kropf pays for what he's done," said Dustin Lance, the attorney representing Joe White.
White was hit and pinned behind a dumpster by Kropf in the same 48-hour period, but before Kropf was arrested and released three times.
"You did horrible on your field sobriety tests," an officer tells Kropf in another traffic stop. "You're not in any condition to operate a car."
White was injured so badly in his accident, he was taken to intensive care. The investigating officer didn't detect impairment at the time of the July 9 accident, but Lance believes Kropf was under the influence of the same drugs he was allegedly using during all of his DUIs.
Kropf was able to keep getting behind the wheel because he kept offending in such a short time period. Rep. Brian King, D-Salt Lake City, said this is a loophole in the law.
"(It's) very troubling," King said. "It's a public safety issue."
King wants to see changes in what officers can do to detain people like Kropf, who offend over and over again within a short amount of time.
Kropf posted bail on Aug. 3 and is currently out of jail. He has been ordered not to leave Logan while he is awaiting trial.
