SALT LAKE CITY — Recent photos show the progress of construction on the Rome Italy Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A news release from the United Kingdom edition of Mormon Newsroom says the temple is being built on a 15 acre site in the Settebagni area of Rome. Once completed, it will serve more than 23,000 church members living in Italy and surrounding countries.

This will be the twelfth temple in Europe and the first in Italy.

The temple's exterior features granite with decorative glazing. It will have two tall spires when completed. The interior finish will include marble, woodwork, Venetian plaster and decorative painting.

The temple will be part of a new religious and cultural center which will include a multifunctional meetinghouse, a visitors' center, family history center, patron housing and gardens.

There are 166 LDS temples throughout the world either in operation, under construction or announced.
