VERNAL — A 9-year-old Colorado boy was killed Sunday when his mother lost control of the car she was driving, which struck an oncoming vehicle, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Devin Carter, of Rangely, Colo., was killed instantly in the 2-car collision west of Vernal just before 5 p.m., UHP Lt. Steve Winward said.
The accident appears to be related to the snowy, icy conditions on the highway, he added.
The 32-year-old Rangely, Colo., woman was driving eastbound on state Route 40 when her 2007 Saturn SD slid sideways into the path a westbound SUV, which T-boned the Saturn.
The woman was transported to a nearby hospital with shoulder and back injuries.
The driver of the SUV, a 30-year-old Vernal woman, was transported to the hospital with hip and extremity injuries. Both drivers are expected to recover from their injuries.
The mother and boy were returning home after he had visited his father, who lives in the Provo area, according to Winward.
