SALT LAKE CITY -- Chevrolet recently held its Route 66 contest, looking for the next great Super Bowl commercial. The winning entry, "Happy Grad," came from an aspiring filmmaker from New York. It will join the ranks of the most viewed, and most talked about commercials of the year.
The countdown has begun for Super Bowl XLVI, and many football fans look forward to the commercials as much as the game itself. When advertisers spend $3.5 million on 30 seconds of air time, the ads are bound to be more memorable than your average spot. But an estimated 100 million consumers see these ads designed for Super Bowl viewers..
Here are five memorable Super Bowl commercials from years past.
'Eye of the Tiger'
When original members of the Survivor rock group sang a revised version of "Eye of the Tiger," the commercial was widely mocked. Starbucks Double Shot is hardly the star of this ad, being upstaged entirely by the "Rocky" theme song, and the middle-age businessman gearing up to one day become...supervisor!
Don't Judge Too Quickly
Ameriquest Mortgage Company got the attention of viewers in 2005 with its quirky but slightly sick sense of humor.
The Joy of Pepsi
At the top of her game and before she had her well-publicized breakdown, Britney Spears sang the Pepsi jingle for 2007 Super Bowl viewers.
What's With the Axe?
Budweiser is known for its iconic Clydesdale horses but veered from that formula in 2008, giving comedy a shot at selling the beer that typically dominates the airtime between touchdowns.
The E-Trade Baby
It appears to be a rule in Hollywood that talking babies are funny. And the E-Trade Baby quickly stole the show at the 2008 Super Bowl and made a succession of even funnier follow-up commercials since the stock-savvy baby premiered.
