SALT LAKE CITY -- Hundreds of Utahns came together to build more than a thousand snowmen Saturday, all in the name of a good cause.
The recent snow set the perfect scene for the event at the Mountain Dell Golf Course in Salt Lake City, where 500 people spent one hour packing snow and dressing up their winter creations with carrots, coal and more.
Some builders added a bit of personality to their snowmen -- one even sported a mohawk.
"It feels amazing to be out here. It's a beautiful day," said Kelly Rarig. "I've never built a snowman, so this is my first snowman ever."
Each snowman had to reach certain height, and don a carrot nose and cookie eyes. The original goal was to make 1,000, but the group surpassed its goal by more than 279 snowmen.
But there's more to this story. For each snowman built, the company Clear Link is going to donate $2 to a group called Youth Making a Difference -- an organization that helps high school teens appreciate the importance of service.
"The money is going to be well received," said Robert Baird, executive director of the group. "It's going to help a lot of kids over in India, and $2,000 can do a lot."
Every year the group travels to India to work at an orphanage.
