SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The man convicted of killing a Salt Lake City woman for $200 in drug money six years ago has been sentenced to up to life in prison.

District Judge Michele Christiansen sentenced 43-year-old Michael Jones on Friday to two terms of five years to life for the first-degree murder and aggravated robbery in the death of 28-year-old Tara Brennan.

She also gave him one to 15 years on a drug charge.

Brennan was an honors graduate from Stanford and was attending law school. But her mother says she suffered from mental illnesses, which caused her to get mixed up with Jones.

Prosecutors say he strangled her to get $200 from her wallet to buy drugs. The case went unsolved for three years before DNA evidence led police to Jones.
