SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah has decided to keep its drum and feather logo, at least for now.

After an initial report by ksl.com Friday indicating that the school would phase out the iconic logo after the Sun Bowl, the university released an official statement Tuesday.

"The University of Utah and its athletics department periodically review the use of the circle and feather logo out of sensitivity for native tribes across the country as well as Utah fans. At this time, the athletics department will continue to use both the circle and feather and the block U logos."

Utes to keep drum and feather logo

Last week, a source close to the Utah athletic department told KSL that the university had already gone away from the drum and feather logo, and that an announcement would be made in mid- January.

Utah athletic director Chris Hill did not deny this report in an interview for The Salt Lake Tribune Saturday before the Utes' matchup with Georgia Tech.

While what transpired between then and Tuesday is still uncertain, fans expressed their support in keeping the the logo on all social media platforms, as well as an online petition, with over 4,600 people petitioning to keep the drum and feather via SignOn.org.
