SALT LAKE CITY — A large, recognizable statue has been stolen from a Sugar House neighborhood. The owner is calling for the thieves to return the statue of a large brown raptor.

Some in the neighborhood, near the trendy 9th and 9th area, call the statue a "landmark". Owner Janelle Smith said she already misses its presence on her front lawn.

"It's kind of our way of feeling like we're part of this community."

Resident Al Sacharov had a warning for the alleged thieves.

"When they find the person who stole the dinosaur they should be sentenced to being eaten by a dinosaur," he said.

Smith said it was likely taken Saturday night while the family was in Park City. She said it was stolen once before by college students who then returned it when they moved.

"They brought it back and dropped it in the yard, which we were thrilled about, but I don't want it to be gone for a year."

She said she got the raptor in California a decade ago and hauled it back to Utah where it's been a landmark ever since.

The statue has been featured in high fashion blogs. Smith said it's time for "Rapty" to come home.

"Really, more than anything, I think we're hoping we can appeal to whoever took it to just bring it back," she said. "It was funny, but not really."

The family has decided not to go to police. They're trying, instead, to get their message out through the media. Anyone with information regarding the stolen raptor statue email 9thraptor@gmail.com.
