SALT LAKE CITY — A yellow submarine partially submerged in the lake at Liberty Park caught the eyes of many Monday afternoon who wondered whether it was an elaborate April Fools' Day prank.
The sub was a prank with a purpose, according to Thanksgiving Point's RUcurious2 campaign, which was designed to promote the Museum of Natural Curiosity, a $27.7 million children's museum scheduled to open spring 2014.
As a part of a "random act of curiosity," Pierre, an actor, attempted to launch a homemade submarine into the lake at Liberty Park. The lake was too shallow, though, and the submarine got stuck, according to a YouTube video that provides background of the event.
The abandoned submarine caught the attention of passers-by and Salt Lake City officials, but no one knew from where it had originated until a press release was sent out Monday evening.
"You may have heard there was a submarine at Liberty Park today," the museum said, taking credit for the submarine and pointing readers to the video.
The museum will teach children science, art, history and culture through more than 150 interactive exhibits. About $24.3 million has been raised for the museum through public and private funds. Another $3.4 million is still needed to complete interior exhibits.
