HELENA, Mont. — Helena police are looking for a man who attempted to rob a Papa John's and began crying before accepting the cashier's offer to take a pizza and wings instead of the cash he originally demanded.

A man walked into the restaurant as the staff was closing the store early Tuesday morning. Wearing a hoodie and a red bandana, he walked straight to the clerk at the front counter, according to Troy McGee, the Helena police chief.

"He presented the clerk with a note which indicated something to the effect of, 'Do what I say and no one will get hurt,' " McGee told Beartooth NBC.

As the cashier began to comply with the man's demands, the would-be robber broke down crying, saying he was robbing the store for his wife and kids.

"The clerk talked to him for a while" and offered the man pizza, wings and soda instead, McGee told the Billings Gazette.

A knife fell out of the man's pocket as he sat waiting for his pizza, McGee said. The man took the food and left the area on foot.

Police are looking for the man, but told KXLF they are not sure what to charge him with since he didn't go through with the robbery.

The incident was the second time this week a robbery has been prevented with an offer of free food. An Alabama man was talked out of robbing a Starbucks on Sunday by a cashier who offered him free coffee, instead.
