SALT LAKE CITY — All teams were back to action this week, with Utah State the only team coming out with a victory. The KSL Sports team has nominated Utah State cornerback Nevin Lawson as this week's Player of the Week.
Player of the Week:
Nevin Lawson, CB, Utah State
Lawson recorded four tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception and two pass breakups in Utah State's 28-24 win. The interception was the fourth of the season for Lawson. His tackle for loss came on UNLV's fake field goal attempt in the second quarter, while both pass break ups came inside the Aggies' own 30-yard line on UNLV's final drive of the game. He helped seal the victory for Utah State and making them bowl eligible for the third straight season. Lawson was named MWC Defensive Player of the Week.
Honorable mention:
Cody Hoffman, WR, BYU
Hoffman hauled in seven receptions for 113 yards and a season-high two touchdowns in BYU's 27-17 loss at nationally-ranked Wisconsin. Hoffman became BYU's all-time leader in receiving yards with his 34-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, while extending his streak of consecutive games with a catch to 39. Already BYU's career leader in receptions and receiving touchdowns, Hoffman has 3,355 yards in his career, placing him atop BYU's career receiving yards list. With 17 games of 100+ yards receiving, Hoffman is now tied with Austin Collie for the school's all-time lead.
Tom Hackett, P, Utah
Hackett landed a kick at the 5-yard line at the end of the first quarter in the Utes' heartbreaking 1-point loss to Arizona State. It was his sixth punt inside the 10-yard line this year and his seventh career punt inside the 5-yard line. He averaged 50.6 yards per punt, dropping three inside the 20-yard line, with four punts of 50+ yards. Hackett's 455 yards punting ranks fifth all-time in a game at Utah.
Hackett had a 70-yard punt in the third quarter, a career-long and the 15th longest punt in school history.
