This is Justin Jones of the Salt Lake Chamber with your Utah Business Report.

Job creation is one of the Chamber's top priorities, and it's great to hear about companies helping to reach our goal of creating 150-thousand jobs in five years. The most recent is the Kroger Company. In fiscal year 2013, the Kroger Company's total active workforce grew by more than 7-thousand jobs. Approximately 90 percent of the new jobs are in the company's supermarket divisions.

The Smith's Food & Drug division added 499 new positions in 2013 throughout Utah, Nevada and New Mexico. 221 of those jobs were in Utah.

Over the last six years, Kroger has created more than 40-thousand new jobs. This figure does not include jobs created as a result of capital investment, such as temporary construction jobs. When combined, Kroger employs more than 375-thousand associates.

Not only that, but Kroger has hired more than 22-thousand veterans since 2009. Kroger has been a part of the "100-thousand Jobs Mission," which has a goal of hiring more than 100-thousand transitioning service members and veterans by 2020—a goal they reached seven years ahead of schedule this January. This is Justin Jones in for Lane Beattie on KSL News Radio.
