This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

While growing up, Barry Thompson loved to ask his dad to draw pictures for him. At the age of 6, his dad suggested he start drawing himself. So, he did, and little did Barry know he had just discovered his life passion. It continued throughout his childhood and later lead to the founding of Pratt Engineering in Hurricane, in partnership with Gerald Pratt.

This eight-year-old company is a full-service civil engineering and land surveying firm with deep roots in Southern Utah. Pratt Engineering specializes in subdivisions, commercial site development and residential structural work for everyone from professional developers to individuals with an idea. They offer a full line of civil engineering and land surveying services. They've developed a strong reputation, meaning many clients find them through word of mouth. In fact, the team has worked on projects from Logan to Pima, Arizona and is also licensed to work in Nevada.

Barry loves what he's doing and brings that focus to his work. Being a land surveyor, he looks at the world as a giant jigsaw puzzle, and he gets to put it together. Sometimes the pieces don't fit so with his problem solving, he has to make it work. And now this work is becoming generational, with Barry's oldest son, Kyle, going to school for engineering while his youngest son, Dylan, does the books. Pratt Engineering has four employees besides owners Barry and Gerald.

This type of work involves an important dedication to precision. It also takes patience, since the process from raw ground to a full subdivision can take anywhere from six months to several years, depending on the complexity and size of the project. Their plans support those in the construction industry so they've developed a great network of contractors, builders and developers who come to them for help with development projects. Pratt Engineering holds Professional Engineering and Land Surveyor certifications.
