This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Here's a lofty mission: moving a community and a business to zero waste. Jeff Whitbeck of Momentum Recycling has a true commitment to our community. He started recycling glass in Salt Lake City two years ago after doing a market analysis and gaining an understanding of the opportunity here in Utah.

Owners Jeff Whitbeck and John Lair are targeting three main areas: mixed recycling (a co-mingle of plastics, metals and glass), glass and education. What started out as 20 drop-off locations in Salt Lake City has turned into a curbside glass pickup business with 3,200 customers, and they're adding 70 to 100 customers every month. Jeff and his team of 20 employees at Momentum Recycling are on a roll.

Their original idea was to get into recycling plastic, but over the course of their market research, they discovered the need for a glass collection business. For a small monthly fee, you can go to their website, momentumrecycling.com, and have this service billed through your utilities. Momentum Recycling accepts glass from all over the state and are hoping to open up a new glass processing plant within the next year.

Jeff and his wife, Kate, met while doing a service mission for the Peace Corps. After 10 years outside the U.S., they wanted to come back to raise their children around family. The opportunity with Momentum Recycling was the perfect fit, in partnership with John.

Interest in their business has been so high they're now receiving glass from as far away as Wyoming and Arizona. This is a wide reach for a glass plant. They believe so strongly in what they're doing, they're also offering a composting operation where they take fruit and veggie scraps, coffee grounds and wood products and turn them into usable compost. This supports their mission of keeping materials out of the landfill.

Not only do they walk their talk with their commitment to recycling and zero waste, they believe in giving people a second chance. Momentum Recycling has partnered with Odyssey House to help put people back to work.
