This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Creating jobs is critical for the Utah economy to maintain and grow the competitive economic advantage Utah has in the United States. So sustaining job stability year in and year out with contributions from legendary companies like Morgan Jewelers has had a major impact for the last 100 years.

This year marks the 100th anniversary for Morgan Jewelers serving the jewelry needs of customers across the Western United States. Company president Nate Morgan says they have 18 stores across Utah, Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon and Nevada, with around 150 employees. And while they're ready to serve just about any jewelry desire, Nate says they're known for wedding rings, which has been their niche.

As the third generation to operate this growing business, Nate says one of the best lessons he learned is to take care of customers. This is why Morgan Jewelers is known for their outstanding care and service, making sure every customer goes home happy. He also believes in the high quality of their product, which adds to customer satisfaction after the sale.

Over the years Nate has watched how old styles always come back around. This allows the Morgan Jewelers team to operate the store based on popular cycles. For example, platinum was big back before World War II, but it was nearly impossible to find and use. Now it's back and in higher demand than ever. But Nate says they get many requests for white gold.

Morgan Jewelers was the first business this side of the Mississippi to offer credit on jewelry, a brilliant move by Nate's grandfather, company founder Nate Morgan, whom he is named after. He set up a deal with the railroad to have their watches calibrated and allow them to buy jewelry on credit. The system worked so well, they built a strong customer base, dating from 1920.

It's another example of how the past shaped Morgan Jewelers, and prepared them to take on new challenges for growth and moving into the third generation of ownership. Congratulations on your 100th birthday!
