If you haven't been to the University of Utah lately, you may have missed all the changes taking place. A big one is the brand new SJ Quinney School of Law Building, now under construction on one of the most prominent locations on the U of U campus.
Dean Bob Adler knew that the current building the school uses, built in 1962, had become obsolete. Along with former Dean Hiram Chodosh (choe-dosh), he helped create a plan for a brand new building, complete with a sustainable design. In fact, the new building is designed to achieve Platinum LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, certification, the highest green building certification you can get. It is likely to be only the second law school building in the country to receive this certification.
It's going to be located on the southwest corner of campus, a major gateway to the U. It will have a beautiful terra cotta exterior meshed with glass and other features and is designed to fit in architecturally with surrounding buildings. Bob says they also created it with the idea of making it accessible for all students.
The SJ Quinney Law School building is on track to be completed by May 2015, with the hope of classes being taught there next summer. In addition to sustainable design, it will include three courtrooms for law students to practice their newly-learned skills.
The SJ Quinney Law School has been one of leading law schools in the country for decades, graduating students who have gone on to become attorneys all over the world. Bob says it's ranked No. 2 in the country after Yale for clinical opportunities. One of their signature programs is the Wallace Stegner environmental law program, ranked among the top programs of its kind in the country. SJ Quinney has also been growing in international law especially with the World Trade Center Utah in Salt Lake City.
A brand new website, at law.utah.edu, will also be rolling out later this summer and includes information about the building and program.
