This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Just think what a life-changing experience this would be. A girl was not doing well in high school and had just found out she wasn't going to be able to graduate. The classroom environment didn't work for her. Mark Middlebrook, marketing director for Mountainland Applied Technology College, connected with the girl and invited her to try one of the many programs the tech college offers.

She's now experiencing great success as an underwater welder, thanks to her time at Mountainland. Thousands of other students from across the state are finding similar success. Their welding program is so popular and job demand is so high that some of these students are getting hired before they can even graduate.

Mountainland Applied Technology College is part of the Utah College of Applied Technology. They are an open entry open exit, competency-based skills training for both high school and adult students. This training is offered with free tuition for high school students and low tuition for adults. Programs include dental assisting, culinary arts, nursing, EMT training, cosmetology, CNA training, pipe welding or CDL certification.

College president Clay Christensen says all programs here are based on actual application everything where students spend time in the classroom learning the theories and then practice in hands-on applications ... Instructors are industry veterans who know what skills are needed for success in the field. One of the best parts of this growing tech college is that it's supporting an important Utah business initiative known as Prosperity 2020, which seeks to have two-thirds of Utahns with a post-secondary certificate or degree by 2020.

Mark has connections with high schools throughout Utah, Wasatch and Summit counties.... They call him with concerns about a student not doing well in the classroom, and he says most of the time these students get into the program and thrive..... He also goes to many high school recruiting and college fairs to find and develop new students.... This past year Mountainland Applied Technology College taught high school students from 5 counties, all of whom attended tuition free... Some employers sponsored adult students so they could be in the program.

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
