This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

An iconic Bountiful deli is celebrating their 15th anniversary this year: Spanky's Deli, at 567 W. 2600 South in the Square at 2600. Owner Roger Holgreen is celebrating all year with weekly specials for his loyal customer base.

Roger says teenagers have been a key to his success at Spanky's Deli. When he opened, people warned him not to hire teenagers. However, in the last over 15 years, over 250 kids have worked for him, and he has really gained faith and trust in this new generation. A lot of times it's just high school kids working the deli, but he's careful to train them on service, cleanliness and their important role in helping the business to be successful, and the teens do a bang up job.

Spanky's is known for their Turkey, Bacon and Avocado sandwich on sourdough bread.... Customers also like "The Big No. 7" which has ham, turkey, roast beef and pastrami, with cheese, bacon and avocado.... Other favorites include homemade chicken salad and barbecue turkey.

Supporting local is an important focus for Roger, which is smart since buying local adds dollars back into the local economy. Spanky's Deli buys their bread from Stoneground Bakery in Salt Lake City. The produce comes from Quality Produce in Salt Lake City … and they hand cut their avocados daily.

When he first opened, Roger's strategy was to advertise heavily to high school and elementary students nearby. He knew if they liked it … they'd tell their friends and family, and the word would spread. Today, the success is obvious — and Roger returns the favor by supporting school carnivals, high school athletics and offering student of the week programs. Spanky's Deli also sponsors dinners for local high school football teams...

Part of Roger's inspiration for Spanky's Deli came through a Scout merit badge.... His scout leader taught him to keep meticulous track of his money, which lead him to create a strict budget and grow a significant nest egg of $50,000, which he used to open Spanky's.
