This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

In New York City, food is a way of life.....And certain foods have become cemented in the city's culture and lifestyle.... One of the most popular is the delicatessen.....The food is rich and plates piled high. A deli in New York becomes a little community — that's the experience Michael and Janet Feldman are seeking to duplicate with their business, Feldman's Deli.... It's designed to be a genuine Jewish deli, right in Salt Lake City.

Feldman's Deli is only six months old, but they've already established a strong following. City Weekly named them the Best Bagel for Best of Utah. They only make about two or three dozen a day, and people love them so much they usually sell out.

Michael was born and raised in New Jersey, so he's very familiar with Jewish delis and all they have to offer....But he didn't start out in the restaurant business..... In fact, Michael got his doctorate in medicinal chemistry.... The department where he trained was one of big three that started the campaign of drug testing athletes.

It was only 18 months ago that he decided to bring a little East Coast flavor to Salt Lake City... And the food, along with the presentation, is very authentic, thanks to Janet....Try the Lox platter with a bagel with tomatoes, red onions and capers.... Or discover soup, salads, sandwiches and desserts....The vision here is New York chic meets ski chalet. The can't miss items here are the corned beef and pastrami, matzo ball soup and knishes.

The neighbors love having an anchor restaurant right in their neighborhood at 2000 East and 27th South.... It's a diverse corner with one of oldest pharmacies in town, a gymnastic training center, clothing boutique, Yoga studio, gas station, book shop and coffee shop.... It's also less than quarter mile from the state's largest Jewish congregation...

The clientele at Feldman's Deli is diverse. They love the idea of supporting neighbors... Michael says that, and all the accolades they've already received, make it all worthwhile. It means their crazy idea wasn't so crazy after all...
