SALT LAKE CITY — The number is at 34 and counting.

The Duchesne Eagles players don't remember what its like to lose. The program has won 34 straight games over three seasons and have a chance to make history this season.

They need just three wins to pass Timpview and set a new state record for consecutive wins. The teams they must beat are Layton Christian, North Summit and Carbon.

They should have no trouble reaching that milestone but winning a fourth consecutive state title will require several inexperienced players to step in this season. They do return quarterback Trent Roberts who threw for 1,116 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2012.

Duchesne has a new challenger this season.

5 games to watch:
Juan Diego at Stansbury: Thursday, Oct. 10

If both teams survive the road trip to Bear River this will likely be a 3AA North Championship game and a possible preview of the state championship game.

Kanab at Duchesne: Friday, Sept. 27

We will find out whether the Eagles have a true challenger or if a 4th consecutive state title in inevitable.

Duchesne at Carbon: Friday, Sept. 6

If the Eagles reach this game with a 2-0 record a win over Carbon will set a new state record for consecutive wins with 37.

Rich at Duchesne: Friday, Oct. 11

These teams have met for so many great battles over the years and Rich would love to be the team that ends Duchesne's winning streak.

Monticello at San Juan: Aug. 30

The Buckaroos will get a shot at their San Juan County rivals. Knocking off the 2A favorites would be an impressive win.

Richfield at Kanab

The Cowboys will get a crack at knocking off a 3A team on their home field.

Kanab returns to 1A after a few years competing at the 2A level.

The Cowboys were 1A state champions in 2007 and are the biggest school in 1A. They also lack experience and will be hoping for a new group of players to step up.

No. 3 Rich has what Duchesne and Kanab don't, experience.

The Rebels return their starting defensive front including defensive end McKay Jarman.

No. 4 Monticello also returns a lot of experience with eight starters back this season. They will be led by senior running backs Austin Maloy and Austin Wilcox.

Diamond Ranch is 5th in the preseason coaches poll.

5 players to watch:

Trent Roberts, Duchesne

The Eagles returning starter at quarterback is an early favorite to win MVP honors. He threw for 1,116 yards and 16 touchdowns leading the Eagles to their third consecutive state title.

McKay Jarman, Rich

He was an all-state performer last year and returns at defensive end and wide receiver where he is expected to make big plays for the Rebels.

Austin Maloy, Monticello

The all-state running back has put up some big numbers the past two years and looks to do the same in 2013.

Luke Crosby, Kanab

He had 40 tackles and 2.5 sacks last season and will be the leader of the Cowboy defense.

Matt Muir, Duchesne

He rushed for 564 yards last year and will now get more carries as a senior. He also had three interceptions on defense.
