I hope BYU fans realize they are seeing something unprecedented in the long history of Cougar athletics. Never before have the football and basketball teams enjoyed the kind of success they are enjoying together, at the same time--led by head coaches that have set new program standards for success.

Consider:
If the BYU Football team wins out, it team will equal the most successful four-year span (in terms of wins) in BYU Football history.
From 1983 through 1986, BYU went 43-9 (83% win rate), with three conference championships. BYU was nationally ranked (final polls) in 1983 (#7), 1984 (#1) and 1985 (#16), but not in 1986. BYU played in four bowls in four seasons.
If BYU wins out this season, the Cougars will have gone 43-9 from 2006 through 2009, with at least two conference championships, and a third still mathematically possible as of today. BYU was nationally ranked (final polls) in 2006 (#16), 2007 (#14) and 2008 (#21), and remains nationally-ranked in 2009 (#18). BYU will play in its fourth bowl in four seasons.

NOTES:
1) From 1979 through 1982, BYU went 42-8 (84%), with four conference championships. Technically, that could also be considered the most successful four-year span in BYU Football history. While BYU was nationally ranked in the final polls in 1979 (#13), 1980 (#12) and 1981 (#13), the Cougars were not ranked in 1982. BYU played in four bowls in four seasons.
2) If BYU reaches 10 wins this season, it will be the first time in BYU Football history that the program has recorded four consecutive 10-plus win seasons.

Head coach Bronco Mendenhall has the highest win percentage of any coach in BYU Football history, at 75.4% (46-15 in his fifth season). Mendenhall is one of only seven active FBS coaches with a win percentage of 75% or higher.
Lavell Edwards is second all-time at BYU win a win percentage of 71.6% (257-101-3). Mendenhall and Edwards are two of only five BYU coaches to win more than half their games.
*******
Entering this season, BYU's basketball team had a record of 97-34 (74%) over the previous four seasons--the most successful four-year span in BYU hoops history, both in terms of wins and win percentage. BYU has won three conference championships in the last four years--two outright, and one shared. BYU has appeared in three NCAA Tournaments over the four-year span, going 0-3.
The next most successful four-year period was from 1991-92 through 1994-1995, when BYU went 94-36 (72.3%), with two shared regular season conference championships. BYU appeared in three NCAA Tournaments, going 1-3.
BYU went 86-33 (72.2%) from 1978-79 through 1981-82, winning two conference championships, and appearing in three NCAA Tournaments, going 3-3--including an Elite Eight run in 1981.
--
With a current record of 99-34, Dave Rose has a career win percentage of 74.4%, the best BYU coaching career win percentage since Henry Rose (!) went 8-0 in his single season of coaching in 1910-11 (including wins over the YMCA and BYU Alumni that year, it should be noted).
If BYU wins at Hawaii tomorrow night, Rose will have achieved 100 wins faster than any other BYU coach, accomplishing the feat in 134 games. Roger Reid is currently the fastest to 100 wins, doing so in 143 games. Stan Watts took 144 games to reach 100 victories.

So, once again, just look at the numbers, reflect on how fortunate we all are to support a program with that kind of success, then take a minute to note the character of the coaches and players accounting for that success.
BYU fans are among the luckiest in college sports--sometimes it's good to remember just how lucky, and enjoy the journey.

After posting yesterday's BYU Basketball PAP numbers, I realized that doing so after only two games is foolhardy at best. So, note the numbers for their empirical value as a statistical formula, but take their current relevance with a grain of salt.

Having referenced Colorado Springs Gazette columnist David Ramsay earlier in the week, I was interested to see that he offered a semi-olive branch/semi-continued critique in one of his latest columns.
