Finally... Football!
...and another "Camp Cougar Countdown Trivia" question.
August 3rd, 2009 @ 5:29am

The week has arrived: college football camps open around the country within days, with BYU players reporting Friday and opening practice on Saturday.

I spent some of the weekend preparing my camp notebooks and position breakdowns, and was reminded of how much I look forward to camp itself. The depth chart battles, the newcomer revelations, the familiar faces securing leadership roles--they're all things that make every August a true highlight of the college football season.

In at least one notable way, the interest in BYU Football "peaks" in August. Later this week, "Cougar Tracks" will celebrate its second birthday. In the first year of my blog, August 2007 recorded the most page views of the first 12-month period. Then, August 2008 marked the most page views of the second 12-month period. What will August 2009 hold? We'll soon see, but I know that lots of you will be checking this space to see who's doing what, day-by-day, during "Camp Cougar." I look forward to seeing you back here this month, and all season.

A couple of BYU defensive notes:

Senior NT Russell Tialavea is in the process of seeing if he can make the adjustments necessary to play for the Cougars this season. His earlier plans had him interrupting his BYU career for an LDS mission--those plans have modified in the last couple of weeks. I would now list Tialavea as "probable" for this season.

Sophomore Jadon Wagner has moved from outside linebacker to defensive end for the coming season. Vic So'oto was previously moved from outside backer to the rush end position, and is now a primary backup at that spot.

Former BYU linebacker Matt Ah You will finish his college career playing football at Central Washington, a Division II school located in Ellensburg, Washington. Ah You heads to the great northwest (and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference) later this week.

Ah You's Wildcats play a national TV game on Thursday, September 3rd, at Minnesota-Duluth; the game will be televised on CBS College Sports at 6:00pm MDT. Ah You will play one game back in his home state this season, as Central Washington visits conference foe Dixie State on October 31st (one of two games against the Red Storm).

Now to today's "Camp Cougar Countdown Trivia" question. Saturday, I asked which Cougar scored the first points of BYU's 1984 season?

The answer: Kicker Lee Johnson, with a 37-yard field goal in the second quarter of the opener with Pittsburgh.

--

Today's question:

"Who was BYU's quarterbacks coach in the 1984 season?

The answer, and our next question, tomorrow.
