The Blue and the Red

   |  Posted Aug 26th, 2010 @ 9:07pm

The Cougars today started preparation for the season opener with Washington by creating a scout team and identifying redshirt candidates.

Of the 23 players specifically listed for BYU prep team duty this season, only one was a regular member of the two-deep at his position during camp: OL Jordan Black.

In other words, there are no surprises in the list below:

2010 Redshirt Candidates

Jordan Black, OL, FR (#2 RT in camp)

Matt Jensen, OL, FR (#3 RT)

Cole Jones, OL, FR (#3 LT)

Quinn Lawlor, OL, FR (#4 RT)

*NCAA ruled Kaveinga ineligible for games in 2010

Notably, newcomer Tayo Fabuluje was not listed as a potential redshirt. The 6'7", 317 lb. freshman from Euless, TX found his way into some reps with the second-unit at DE by the end of camp.

After fielding five team captains in 2009, BYU will bring only two players into the pre-game coin toss this season. OL Matt Reynolds and safety Andrew Rich have been selected as 2010 team captains.

Said head coach Bronco Mendenhall: "Andrew and Matt are both fantastic representatives of our program and outstanding football players; both have demonstrated they are capable of leading our team on and off the field."

As noted above, redshirt freshman DE Thomas Bryson has been suspended for the season opener due to a team rules violation.

The Cougars held a closed practice this afternoon, and will hold closed practices on Friday and Saturday mornings before taking Sunday off. There will be morning media availabilities on each of the next two days.

Bronco Mendenhall's first weekly press conference is scheduled for Monday morning at Legends' Grille in the BYU Student Athlete Building.

As in years past, the press conference audio will be posted on "Cougar Tracks" immediately after the conclusion of Mendenhall's remarks. Interviews with BYU players will also be posted.
