A long-awaited remake hits the big screen this weekend. In this updated version of "A Christmas Carol," Jim Carrey plays four separate roles-- Scrooge, as well as the three ghosts who visit him.
Perhaps the most beloved story associated with the holiday season, short of the Christmas story itself, is Charles Dickens' 1843 classic, "A Christmas Carol." Few stories have been given so many treatments on the big screen.
The latest is Disney's animated version, featuring the voice of Jim Carrey in a myriad of roles but primarily as the infamous old miser himself, Ebenezer Scrooge. It's always a joy to watch this tale of redemption and ultimate goodness unfold and there is much to praise here.
The movie is relatively true to the book, and the texture and feel of backdrops and landscape are spectacular especially with the digital 3-D.
But, it's the motion capture style of animation that sadly shortchanges the beloved characters. We saw the same thing with "Polar Express." While I liked that film, it too delivered this same, waxy hollowness.
Colin Firth supplies the voice for nephew Fred, Gary Oldman is Cratchet, and their delivery is superb. But their likenesses are that of a wax museum, especially Oldman. Cratchet is integral to the spirit of the tale but Director Robert Zemeckis has delivered a character almost elf-like and, with Oldman's likeness, almost creepy.
Even with that criticism, it's still well worth seeing. But be aware that for the younger movie-goers, it gets a little scary at times.
I'm giving this movie 3 stars and it's rated PG.
