TOOELE COUNTY –Police say if you need proof seat belts save lives, this is it. Three people are alive to talk about what happened to them overnight, because they were buckled up.

It started when a piece of tire flew off of another car, and the driver swerved to avoid it.

That woman and her two passengers rolled 75 feet down an embankment just west of the Salt Lake-Tooele County line on Interstate 80.

They came to rest upside down at around 11:00 p.m. Wednesday.

“There was a female driver who was able to get out on her own,” UHP Trooper Chris Lewis said. “There was a male passenger in the back seat and a female passenger in the front seat that needed to be extricated from the vehicle.”

But Lewis says they all survived with non-life-threatening injuries, because they were wearing seat belts.

Air ambulances took the passengers and a ground ambulance took the driver to a hospital just as a precaution.

Part of the freeway was closed for about an hour.

KSL is teaming up with UDOT on the road to zero fatalities, which goes far beyond just buckling up. You can learn more here.
