What causes the "warm before the storm?"

Typically we have a day of warmer temperatures before a storm moves in. For example this weekend in Utah featured highs in the 50's and now we're going to have colder temps. and some snow.
What's happening is an area of low pressure. The air moves around it in a counter-clockwise fashion. This means, before it gets here, the air is moving out of the south or generally a warmer direction. Once it moves over us, the wind shifts to the north and it helps usher in colder air. So first you get the warm day, then a cold one.
