An enjoyable hobby includes growing indoor plants. They add a natural feel to interior spaces and help people in proximity to them to feel less anxiety and stress. One difficulty with indoor plants that many experience is keeping them healthy. This is especially true during the winter months when indoor light levels and humidity are lower than during the summer.

Fortunately, there are a number of indoor plants that are more adapted to the less than ideal conditions we provide them. Among them is pothos, a vine plant native to parts of Australia, China and Japan. In tropical areas it is grown ornamentally outdoors, where it sometimes escapes and becomes problematic. Fortunately, when grown indoors it does not do so. Pothos has green leaves 1-2 inches wide and 2-3 inches long. Additionally, individual vines can extend several feet from the pot but are easily pruned to a desired length.

Many cultivars with various leaf variegations exist. Some have mottled white and green leaves, while others have a green and creamy yellow coloration. Simple green forms also exist.

Pothos tolerate bright to moderately low light and average indoor temperatures. In lower light levels, they commonly lose their variegation. Fertilize throughout the summer with a commercial indoor plant fertilizer and maybe occasionally during the winter. Allow the soil to dry out moderately between irrigations. During the winter, they may only need to be watered once weekly. Transplant to a slightly larger pot every two to three years. Pothos plants are widely available from local retail greenhouses, grocery stores and box stores.
