SALT LAKE CITY -- While the Jazz draft team held its annual "Night before the draft dinner" and kept working toward Thursday's NBA draft, the Cavs and Suns were rocking the league, agreeing on the long-discussed Shaq trade.
Pending league approval, Phoenix sends the 37-year-old, 15 time NBA All-Star to the Cavs along with his expiring contract (one year at $20 million left) to join LeBron James in Cleveland. In return the Suns get Ben Wallace, former Jazzman Sasha Pavlovic, the 46th pick in Thursday's draft and $500,000 cash.
While it's clearly a cash dump for the Suns, saving them nearly $10 million in salary and luxury tax implications. Don't forget the "Big Shac-tus" had a solid year in Phoenix, averaging nearly 18 points and 8 and a half rebounds a game.
So the Cavs get the low-post presence they didn't have (Orlando's Dwight Howard ate the Cavs up), a marquee name to help sell tickets and the expiring contract that they can use to help afford a big extension for "King James" next summer.
Meanwhile, ESPN's Chad Ford reports Carlos Boozer may not get the fat contract and raise he's planning on (if he opts out of the final year of his Jazz contract). Detroit's been his supposed destination, but Ford says the Pistons may not even offer Boozer a contract. Of course all this could be just the beginning of negotiations with Boozer's camp.
With the Spurs getting Richard Jefferson and the Cavs wheeling and dealing for Shaq to try to get better, what will the Jazz do come draft day? We'll all be watching and hoping.
